The second probe Grail in the orbit of the Moon

Monday, January 2, 2012

The U.S. space agency NASA research confirms that the second of two lunar probes entered orbit of the moon. With this successful mission began extensive research on the Earth's only satellite, said in a statement the agency.

Probe GRAIL-B (Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory) was placed in orbit the moon, after its main engine worked more than 40 minutes lunar south pole to its slow speed, say scientists involved in the mission.

Day before, the same procedure was established and its twin probe, GRAIL-A.

Both probes GRAIL-A and GRAIL-B will carry out research on the moon as they have not been made, said the mission chief, Charles Bolden.

"Twin GRAIL spacecraft in large scale will expand our knowledge of the moon but will also help to better understand the development of our planet," said Bolden.

The distance between the Earth and the Moon is 402,336 km and the astronauts of Apollo spacecraft took three days to go.

Both GRAIL probes launched from Cape Canaveral military base in Florida on 10 September 2011, had a thirty times more time and passed more than four million miles to reach the moon.
